Multisite Planning

Multiplication Grid

Multiplying reach in new areas is a key way churches grow. Today, churches have at least four distinct multiplication opportunities:

  • Launching a regional campus
  • Repurposing an existing church belonging to a struggling congregation
  • Planting a new church
  • Initiating a strategic partnership (church revitalization)

With limited resources to invest, your church needs to meet a set of conditions before proceeding with any multiplication opportunity. A multiplication grid is one way to clarify where, when and under what circumstances a church will launch a new work. Here’s a sample multiplication grid:

New Campus Documents

Regional campuses—or multisites—play a major role in many multiplication strategies. By extending its reach into new areas underserved or unreached by other churches, a multiplying church can mobilize its people, money, strategy, mission and vision for maximum effect across an entire region.

Campus Pastor

Finding the right campus pastor is the first priority for a new multisite. No other element is as important for the long-term success of a new campus. Create a campus pastor profile to:

  • Introduce the church and community context
  • Present the new campus prospectus
  • Summarize the position scope and job responsibilities
  • Describe required candidate skills, strengths, gifts and personality

A sample position profile might look like this:

Once a hire is made, prepare a campus pastor development plan to outline pre-launch activities and fieldwork. Most churches set the minimum pre-launch phase at 6 months or more:
